Product Function:

This state-of-the-art anesthesia machine ingeniously fuses a ventilator to deliver anesthetics with utmost precision and efficiency.

The modern anesthesia machine boasts four primary functions:

  1. Oxygenation
  2. Exact blending of anesthetic vapors
  3. Ensuring proper ventilation
  4. Minimizing personnel exposure to anesthetic vapors

The anesthesia machine is organized into three fundamental segments:
(1) A high-pressure system,
(2) An intermediate pressure system, and
(3) A low-pressure system.
Both high and intermediate pressure systems are gauged in pounds per square inch (psi) or kilopascals (kPa), while the low-pressure system is measured in centimeters of water (cmH20). The high-pressure system draws oxygen at 2200 psi, air, and nitrous oxide at 745 psi from an E-cylinder (designating the cylinder size) attached to the anesthesia machine's rear. A regulator then adjusts this to 45 psi. This system is primarily employed when pipeline supply is unavailable or inaccessible, such as in distant anesthesia settings. Conversely, the intermediate pressure system sources gases from the hospital's pipeline set at 50 psi, acting as the main gas supply in contemporary hospitals. This system channels gas to the flowmeters. Beyond the flowmeters lies the low-pressure system, delivering fresh gas flow (oxygen at 14 psi and/or nitrous oxide at 26 psi) to vaporizers, providing a volatile anesthetics source. The patient inhales and exhales within the anesthesia machine's low-pressure system.

Gas Flow Through the Anesthesia Machine

Outlined here is the typical gas journey through the modern circle system anesthesia machine:

  1. Gas (oxygen, air, nitrous oxide) enters the system via a pipeline and cylinder supply. The pipeline supply, functioning at 45 to 60 psi (intermediate pressure system), is the main source. When it fails, the high-pressure E-cylinder takes over, with its high and varying pressure moderated by a regulator to approximately 45 to 60 psi.
  2. Once in the intermediate pressure system, gas proceeds to the flowmeter, where the anesthesiologist adjusts the fresh gas flow to the patient. Beyond the flowmeters, the gas transitions into a low-pressure system with pressures under 1 psi (about 70 cm H2O required), measured in cm H20.
  3. Subsequently, the gas may encounter a variable bypass or measured flow vaporizer to achieve its volatile anesthetic form.
  4. It then crosses a unidirectional inspiratory valve, ready for patient inhalation through the inspiratory limb of the circle system.
  5. Expired gas from the patient courses through the expiratory limb of the circuit, navigating the unidirectional valve therein.
  6. Assuming the ventilator is off or set to manual/spontaneous mode, excess system pressure is relieved by the adjustable pressure-limiting (APL) valve, with the expelled gas being whisked away by the scavenger system.
  7. Remaining gas in the circuit passes through a CO2 absorber, where carbon dioxide is efficiently eradicated from expired gas.
  8. Beyond the CO2 absorber, expired gas merges with the fresh gas flow from the pipeline or E-cylinders, ready for recycling. This recycling conserves volatile anesthetics and facilitates low-flow anesthesia, reducing waste.
